Teva Tip 19 - Campfire Smoke Barometer

A barometer is an instrument that measures air pressure. Typically, at this time of the year a change in air pressure from high to low means a storm is coming.  While there are ways to make barometers, they are not usually a part of camping equipment.  Fortunately, you don't really need one to see what's happening with air pressure.  Instead you can tell what's happening why watching the smoke of your campfire.  If the smoke rises upward, you're in high air pressure and the weather will not be changing.  If the smoke drifts along the ground for a ways before it rises, this indicates low air pressure and most probably a storm of some sort.  Pay attention to your smoke and you could stay out of a lot of trouble.
